Hey Strangers!! :)
Monday, May 23, 2011
"I just have a general question for corporate. I don't have an issue with a specific store since my last bad coupon experience with your store I just take my business to other stores that gladly accept my coupons. Anyway I have heard so many horror stories regarding the cashiers at your stores all across the country. I am wondering if it is in your policy to allow your cashiers to treat customers that way? I have heard numerous reports of cashiers referring to someone using coupons as "you people" also accusing them of stealing, fraud etc. I really think that it is time for your company to retrain your cashiers and put a copy of your policy at all of the registers. There is absolutely no reason for people to have to be scared or humiliated because they are trying to provide for their families. I am just sick by all of this. Also it would be nice if you would pass along that most people that coupon don't like that Extreme Couponing show either and are not trying to do anything besides provide for their families. Thanks."
I know this probably won't do anything, but if I just think it and don't do anything then I'm not helping anything. :)

Scotch PDF Coupons question
I noticed a few posts on other sites and blogs regarding the pdf coupons, specifically the Scotch Magic Tape one. They were concerned that the company only meant for customers to print one coupon and that they would not reimburse Walgreens for the tape purchases. So as I was reading these I thought there is one way to find out. So I emailed them letting them know I received the coupons after signing up for their newsletter and I was wondering how many I could print and if they were only meant for one per transaction. Here is the response I got:
Hello Heather,
Thank you for contacting 3M Stationery Division.
Some coupons may only allow one print. If other prints are available you
may print as many coupons as you would like. If the coupon states, "One per
household/purchase" or other such language then there is a limit as to how
many may be used accordingly.
Some retailers honor Internet printed coupons, other do not. The retailers
set their own policy in this regard. We suggest that you call the retailer
and ask for their policy (before making a trip to the store!).
Let us know if we may be of further assistance.
Best regards,
Matt

Well the PDF's I have do not have any limits on them so I would say we are ok. Just wanted to pass this along in case anyone was wondering.

Blog of The Week
Our blog of the week this week is Magical Savings Network. This is a great site that links a bunch of different bloggers so that you are sure to find deals for many different regions! They also are recruiting more bloggers so if you are interested in joining the network be sure to check out the information on how to contact them on the left. I highly recommend them if you are either starting out or an old pro at blogging. I was going to join, but I don't post regularly enough that I thought it wouldn't be fair to them. The Wizard started it up and is very very helpful if you need help even with just getting your blog started up! Of course all of the members are helpful! They are a great bunch of people be sure to check it out!
Guest Post: Couponing Honestly
Hello everyone. I had a question sent to me this week, and I really thought it deserved more attention, and that everyone new to coupons would benefit from. There has been a lot of talk lately, much of it due to the TLC program Extreme Couponing, surrounding ethical couponing, and coupon fraud. This is very important topic.
There are several "rules" to be followed when couponing.
1) First, what is written on the coupon is what the company intended. There is chatter lately about coupon decoding. This involves the numbers under the bar code on the coupon. Those barcodes tell the register how to deduct the coupon, and the numbers actually let a person understand how it will be deducted. "Some" coupons are not always coded in the same manner intended and people take advantage of those discrepancies- getting the wrong product, the wrong size, different varieties, etc. This is something that is not approved of, and could cause several affects. For one, the store may not get reimbursed for coupons redeemed in an unapproved manner. Secondly, it could cause you great embarrassment at the store level if you are caught trying to use a coupon in a wrong manner. It could also cause the checkers to scrutinize further transactions of yours, knowing you tried to pass off a bad coupon. It could also have a long term affect on companies putting out coupons!
2) If it is too good to be true, it probably is. There are some people out there who know how to create fake coupons. When you see a coupon, especially one that is online, emailed to you, or is an extremely high value, take caution. That is not to say all coupons are fakes- you can contact companies about a product concern and they will often times send you a free item coupon, but those are generally on glossy paper and look like a real coupon. Others may look real, but aren't. A good place to double check on a coupon you get is The Coupon Information Center. This is an agency looking to prevent coupon fraud and will monitor and post all coupons deemed to be fake.
3) DO NOT COPY printable internet coupons. This is a BIG NO-NO!!! Just because you are able to print it out on your computer printer does make it legal to copy the coupon. Internet coupons have many safe guards on them to make sure they are not copied. Some will have a watermark that will show up when copied. Almost ALL coupons have an extra barcode on top of the coupon that has a unique code that is printed on each coupon print.
Therefore, if you do copy it, it will have the same "unique" code and the company will not reimburse the store. Many stores will just opt to NOT take ANY internet coupons due to the misuse as it costs the store $$. Worse yet, that code can be tracked back to the person/account on which it was printed. Do you want to chance a coupon fraud allegation just to save an extra $1??
You are able to print 2 coupons per computer at most coupon sites. You can print from as many computers as you have in house. Get your family/friends to print some if you need/want extra. Please DO NOT copy coupons!!!!!
4) Be Considerate I am one of those folks who believe you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I always warn customers in line behind me that I may take a while because I have a lot of coupons- nothing worse than having heavy sighs and eye rolling going on behind you when you are checking out.
I am also nice to the cashiers. They can make your transaction go smoothly or not, and I feel if I am polite and friendly to them, they will be the same.
And those folks that argue with the cashier over every little thing, and have the ENTITLEMENT attitude, ugggggg they drive me crazy! Coupons are put out as an enticement to buy a product, not a god given gift. Don't take it too seriously. You win some you lose some, that is how life goes. If they are out of stock (OOS), then politely ask for a rain check or inquire when the next shipment will be. Don't stand around yelling and screaming. You only make yourself look childish and the cashiers will remember you as "that couponing lady"- and I don't mean in a good way!
I urge you to keep it honest and real when couponing. Those of us doing this for some time have seen many instances where coupons have been misused and the repercussions that have come from that. I would like to share a friend of mines FaceBook Page- Ethical Couponing Initiative and encourage you to join in her cause and coupon ethically!
As far as Allegations go stemming form the TLC Extreme Couponing show, the CIC has put out a statement that I thought you would all enjoy reading.

Going Green
In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.
The woman apologized to him and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.”
The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."
He was right, that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.
Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.
But they didn’t have the green thing back in that customer's day.
In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building.
They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.
But she was right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.
Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind.
They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind
and solar power really did dry the clothes.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.
But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.
Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana .
In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you.
When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not polystyrene or plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power.
They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.
They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water.
They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.
But they didn’t have the green thing back then.
Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.
They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.
And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.
But isn't it sad that the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?
I hope you GET IT, the point being that we of the older generations didn’t NEED the Green Thing, as we weren’t anywhere near as WASTEFUL as the Modern Generations are. And most of us oldies still aren’t so wasteful.

Proper Coupon Usage
As many of you probably know there has been some fraudulent coupon usage shown on TV. I won't get into any specifics, but there is absolutely no reason to use a coupon fraudulently. Any couponer that has been doing this for any amount of time knows that you can get plenty of products very cheap and even free by doing this legitimately. If you ever have any questions about something you can always ask me or go on any of the legitimate coupon sites. There are plenty out there so don't fall for the wrong ones. I also want to let you guys know that there are so many couponing sites that show you how to coupon for free. There really isn't any reason to pay for the information. I understand if you want to take a class, because you are a visual learner. I am referring to some posts that were brought to light where you can purchase the information on how to coupon. Please don't EVER purchase that information. Come to me I will give you the information or the sites. :)
Collin over at Hip2Save has a lot of very great learning videos. Today she did her weekly Coffee with Collin video about Proper Coupon Usage. Go HERE to check it out. It is very informational. Her site is another site that you don't have to worry about anything fraudulent going on. She has an awesome site it is one of my favorites.
Eagle Cam
I have been watching this for the past two days. It is so neat. I thought I would share it here in case any of you haven't heard of it. So far there are two babies and one egg yet to hatch. I watched them feed the babies this morning after work. So cool! Go HERE to check it out. :)
*The picture is not the actual eagles on the cam just one off the web. :)

Extreme Couponing on TLC
Alright I just have to comment on this show. I watched the one hour episode they did at the end of last year. Last night I watched the two newest episodes. Now anyone that knows me knows that I am all for couponing and saving money. I try to help anyone out that is interested and I think it is awesome to be able to save money. I call myself a coupon junkie...those that work with me know that if they get me in "coupon mode" it is hard to get me to shut up about it! LOL
Now that being said I do NOT think that anyone should do it as extreme as the people on the show do. I know a lot of people will disagree with me and I am not pointing fingers at any one person on the show. Now I am all for having a stockpile. I have one too as you can see in some of my older posts. I am also not going to say how much I think someone should have or how big their stockpile should be. I am not in their situation and I don't know what they need. The thing that gets me is that I coupon to SAVE money not to see how much I can buy in one trip. It is a rush to get a ton of things and pay very little believe me I know that. The thing is once you get a stockpile you are suppose to USE items from your stockpile. In my opinion that is the reason for having one. The other thing about a stockpile...in my point of view....is to get the things your family uses cheap and then once you have a stockpile of that item you won't have to get anymore until it is free or a moneymaker. That is how I do it and that is how I save us so much money.
An example. Let's use the Dial hand soap from the very first episode. The reason I am using this is because I did the exact same deal myself. Okay. The soap was $1 and you use a .35 coupon that doubles making this only .30 each. Now that is an AWESOME price. I think I had 7 coupons so over 4 different trips to this store...not in one day...I got them along with other items. (My Kroger only allows doubling of two like coupons in one transaction) So now I have 7 that I paid .30 for. Now the people on the show did show their stockpile. If you remember correctly the person that purchased this had a TON in their stockpile already. So my thing is if you already have 50 things of hand soap in your home then are you really saving money by going and buying 60 more? Even at .30 each that is $18 that you could have SAVED or spent on something else. Just my opinion. That is the main reason I don't like how they portray couponing on the show. Please if you are starting out don't just get something because you CAN. Get something because you NEED it!!!
I for one don't have all the room in the world for a stockpile like that. I honestly think you shouldn't coupon this way. Leave some for others. Be a considerate couponer. Use your coupons correctly. If you are unsure of something ASK! Most people are more than happy to help. One great site that I love is Have Coupons Will Travel. I promise you if you go to this site and ask a question no one will jump on you. No one will treat you like you are stupid. That is the only site I have seen...and I have seen a lot....that you don't see negative comments. You just don't.
I know this is long it is a rant, but I also wanted to say why. Let me know what you think of the show. I think the show would be a lot better if it helped others LEARN! Isn't TLC supposed to be The Learning Channel? Hmmmm. Ok I will hush now. :)
Have FUN couponing!!!
